La Escondida Mexican Grill 15 Mar 25

La Escondida Mexican Grill 400 W Parkwood Ave Suite 124   Friendswood, Texas  77546          laescondidagrill.com Why I Chose This Spot: Back in 2013 or so, I came up with a New Year's resolution.  Once a month, I'm going to try an eatery that I've never tried before.  Some of these eateries I have found simply by driving by.  Some of them have been on a TV show, like on The Food Network, or The Travel Channel.  We're down to a core group of two couples (there have been many months with more than a dozen in our group).  This evening, my partner at work and his girlfriend joined us.   First Impressions: This eatery is is located at the end of a small strip center, and it's difficult to see from the main road, as there is another building in front of it.  I frequent the Nursing Home across the street, so I drive by it often.   The Service: Our server was extremely good, and know...

Fat Boy's Pizza 14 Mar 25

Fat Boy's Pizza 10445 W. Grand Pkwy S     Richmond, Texas  77407      eatfatboyspizza.com Why I Chose This Spot: The Wife was craving pizza, and this pizzeria is new to our area.   First Impressions: As this establishment is situated in the midst of a modern strip center, it didn't stand out.  Upon entering, the dining area was very clean, with multiple booths and tables, at which to sit.  It appeared to have a full bare, with plenty of seating there, as well.  There was covered patio dining (for the 2 months each year in which the weather is nice enough to eat outside).   The Service: Order at the counter, and then grab a table.  The young lady who took our order was knowledgeable, and friendly.   The Menu: The restaurant was known for their 2' slices (of virtually any pizza they make).  They make a 12", a 16" or a 30" (yes, you read that right).   What was ordered: The Wife ordered a small...

Tiger Noodle House 12 Mar 25

Tiger Noodle House 2424 Rice Boulevard A, Houston, TX 77005      tigernoodletexas.com Why I Chose This Spot: I'm frequently looking for a good Chinese restaurant.  My partner and I were in the general area with a patient, and the map on my phone recommended it.  It was highly reviewed, and the photos were flattering.   First Impressions: As this establishment is situated in the midst of a modern strip center, it didn't stand out.  Upon entering, the dining area was very clean, with multiple booths and tables, at which to sit.  There was not an abundance of Chinese decor.  It appeared to be a higher-end eatery (it wasn't).   The Service: There were only a few customers at the time, so sat down in a booth, The server met us at the table with the menus, and then Jasmine Tea (hot), and then water.  She soon returned and took my drink order (iced tea).  She was questioned about her favorite dish, and what we...

The Ol' Railroad Cafe 28 Feb 25

The Ol' Railroad Cafe 1901 Ave G Rosenberg, TX 77471          olrailroad.com Why I Chose This Spot: While running errands, I decided to stop for lunch.  I really like history (and comfort food). Note:  One of the oldest buildings located in the heart of Historic Downtown Rosenberg, The Vogelsang building was built in 1910 by Jacob Gray. This building was leased by Louis A. Vogelsang in 1912 for his general merchandise business. Vogelsang bought the property in 1922, and continued to operate his store at this site until 1947. The Vogelsang building has been kept in the family since 1912.   First Impressions: This eatery is is located inside of an extremely old building, so I was stoked about going in.  You actually enter the restaurant through the General Store.   The Menu: They have a menu for Brunch, Lunch, and Supper.   What I ordered: While perusing the Lunch menu, the barte...

JWilsons 13 Feb 25

JWilsons 4190 Gladys Ave, Beaumont, TX 77706          jwilsons.com Why I Chose This Spot: While in town on the ambulance, my partner and I decided to stop for supper.  According to the iPhone, this eatery was highly rated, so we went.   First Impressions: This eatery looks like the mental image that you develop when looking at the name.   The Menu: The large (quantity) menu contained "Shareables," Sandwiches, Salads, and Entrees.  They have a decent smattering of Sides, as well.   What I ordered: My partner ordered the Flank Steak Stack, which is situated on a bed of red potatoes and smoked Gouda cream, topped in chimichurri sauce.  I ordered their Hamburger Steak Stack "loaded" with jalapenos and cheddar, topped with a mushroom gravy. The Food: Everything that we ordered was delicious, and prepared correctly.  Both of us liked our meal a lot. Value for Money: The prices ranged ...
